Edwin Jeans

Levi Vintage, Edwin or Samurai Jeans

Here’s a question on the Kitmeout forum delving into the question of top notch denim. Worth a butchers:

“Loving the look of these jeans, not had hands on any yet, differences between these, how good are each brand and where best available, I’ve discovered now Levi Vintge are an online or Regent Street purchase, Edwin only seen online but been recommended Interstate and Samurai I got no idea where to find, how good are each what is cut like, being bulky legged I need straight cut without being slim but like a nice dark raw denim finish for a new outfit combination I’m thinking but preferably not needing me to lose another stone to fit them! Throw your opinions of these brands at me, pleasseeee.”

Oldest Japanese Denim Brand

The question was asked – take a butchers at the thread, includes:

“Interesting topic, I called the European distributors of Sugar Cane jeans and they confirm that Sugar Cane jeans first produced their jean in 1975. did further research on the other Japanese brands and 45rpm started in 1978. so does any one have any dates for Edwin or others.”

The conclusion was Edwin jeans. Is there any older brand?

EDWIN – Fall/Winter 2011 Collection

Edwin Jeans 2011

Following the Second World War, the American occupation forces remaining in Japan helped to introduce denim ‘jeans’ culture, which would become a global cultural phenomenon.

In 1947, Tsunemi Yonehachi Shoten was established as a U.S Military Surplus clothing store in the Nippori district of Tokyo. The store was a family business, and was to be the starting point for the EDWIN brand, as we know it today.

After many years of dedication to the Tsunemi Yonechi Shoten business, Shuji Tsunemi, the son of the founders was passed ownership in 1961. Mr Tsunemi, had an acute understanding for the power of denim culture, and the potential it represented, having spent some years studying in California.

He recognised the opportunity for importing used, five pocket denims from the U.S. and that year the Tokyo store changed its name to EDWIN (using the letters from the word DENIM, and flipping the M to a W) and quickly became the specialist in reconditioned second hand denims.

We are proud to release the 2011 Fall / Winter collection and celebrate the 50th year of premium quality jeans manufacture, utilising many exclusively developed fabrics both in Japan and Europe.

K.K. Tsunemi had a passion for denim, inspiring him to import used denim directly from the United States as no denim was manufactured in Japan at the time.

In 1961 Mr Tsunemi crafed the first pair of Edwin denim jeans. The Edwin brand was born, the name created using the spelling of D.E.N.I.M and turning the ‘M’ on it‘s head, forming Edwin.

In 1963 Edwin produced the world’s heaviest ringspun denim (16oz), featuring the famous tri-colour ‘Rainbow’ selvage, still in use within this collection. the origianl pieces were so heavy, they were reputed to stand up by themselves.

During the 1970’s Edwin were the first company in the world to develop ‘old wash’, designed to replicate denim worn for a long period of time showing natural wear patterns.

The 1980’s saw a truly innovative progression with Edwin inventing the ‘Stone Washing’ technique, a pivotal moment in the evolution of denim manufacture.

Edwin created the ‘New Vintage’ denim concept during the 1990’s, designed to hand-replicate the subtle beauty of original vintage washes.

Edwin is an authentic Japanese denim brand priding itself on innovation and craftsmanship, utilising exclusive fabrics and fabrication, unique technology, hand wash processes and continual progression in design and fit.

Edwin. Proudly manufacturing to the highest quality as standard.

Edwin Jeans supports One Percenters

Edwin Jeans supports One Percenters
Edwin Jeans is one of the main sponsors of the One Percenters. Their generous support will provide a comprehensive list of desperately needed equipment to schools in India.

Whats this all about? A Race across India in a superbly unsuitable 3 wheel Rickshaw. We will travel over 2000 miles from tropical south to Himalayan north in just 14 days.

The Machine? Indian manufactured, powered by 7 lame horses, this beast will reach 34 mph in perfect conditions- ie. downhill, unblemished tarmac, favourable wind- but this is India! Loud, uncomfortable, prone to breaking down and completely useless at protecting you. Perfect!

The Risks? Yes. There is no safety team, no back up mechanics, no assurances. Racers have been hit by buses, rolled their rickshaws, chased by men with sticks, and many end in hospital. No road signs, no rules, dodgy stomachs, and tigers.

Why? To raise heaps of cash for amazing charities! We, the One Percenters, pay for all our travel and costs. So EVERY single penny you donate goes directly to the charities.

Who? Dylan O’Shea & Simon Devine are the One Percenters

How to Donate? We are raising for three charities. £500 for Frank Water Projects who provide clean sustainable water in India another £500 for Mercy Corps who provide disater relief to places like Haiti. Please click on the Just Giving links to the right to donate to these important charities.

Our third and primary charity is Education For All -these guys (headed up by Si) rescue and recycle school equipment destined for landfill in the UK and arrange it to be sent to equip schools in developing countries.

BIG GIVERS so far are EDWIN Jeans – thanks for your support guys! Everyone should buy Edwin Jeans today – trust us they fit gooood! Edwin’s generosity will fund more than one container of equipment that will kit out a school of 500-700 pupils. Superb!

Edwin jeans + Onitsuka Tiger The Onitsuka Tiger x Edwin jeans are based on Edwin’s authentic 503 jeans. While the men’s jeans have a tiger embroidered on the coin pocket, the women’s jeans have a tiger face in the same place. On the back, both men’s and women’s models have an Onitsuka Tiger label on the right pocket.

The leather label at the waist displays the Onitsuka Tiger and Edwin brand names, and the contour of a tiger face as well as the number 503 are embroidered in yellow thread. Both men’s and women’s pairs are available in light and dark indigo.

From September 15, the jeans will be out in 11 Onitsuka Tiger stores in Japan, four Edwin direct stores, as well as the Onitsuka Tiger shop-in-shop at Hankyu Department store INGS in Osaka.

From early December, Onitsuka Tiger stores in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Zurich, Berlin, Sydney and a soon to open Hong Kong store will also be selling the jeans collection. In Japan, the jeans will retail at 19,950 yen (USD 175 or EUR 127).

Edwin Jeans Advertisers welcome a new star!

Edwin Jeans Advertisers welcome a new star!Edwin Jeans Advertisers and proud parents Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt welcome new baby girl, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, who was born the night of May 27, 2006 in Namibia, Africa. The new parents, along with kids Maddox, 4, and Zahara, 1, have been staying at a luxury resort in Namibia since April, where their personal security team and Namibian police have shielded them from paparazzi. This all seems a touch sensationalistic but it goes with the Jolie and Pitt territory. No doubt Billy-Bob and Jennifer are chuffed!

Angelina Jolie in new Edwin Jeans advert?

Angelina Jolie in new Edwin Jeans advertSo Angelina Jolie is taking over from her reputed husband-to-be, Brad Pitt, and will appear in a new Edwin Jeans advert.  According to America’s Us Weekly magazine Angelina Jolie was spotted filming the Edwin Jeans advert in California whilst her adopted son played with Brad Pitt nearby.

Brad Pitt was the face of Edwin jeans in Asia from 1996 to 1999 and helped the brand establish itself as a major denim force but he always refused to appear in American adverts for the aspiring premium denim brand. Perhaps Angelina is less coy about playing to her home audience? If the story’s true it’ll be a major coup for Edwin Jeans who are determine to snatch a sizeable slice of the American denim market.

Angelina Jolie, or Laura Croft, gracing the screens in a pair of tight Edwin’s is bound to attract much excitement and, indeed, sales. Smart move Edwin!

Brad Pitt’s Edwin Jeans versus Levi Jeans

Brad Pitt's Edwin Jeans versus Levi JeansThe fashion rumor-mill is rumbling and if speculation is to be believed Edwin Jeans are ready to battle the might Levi’s for global denim domination. Edwin Jeans has something of a reputation of being the Levi Jeans of the East and has held a dominant position in the Japanese denim market for many years which a great many fashion commentators attribute to superior product quality and intelligent advertising based around the world’s sexy man, Brad Pitt.

Brad Pitt was the face of Edwin jeans in Asia from 1996 to 1999 and helped the brand establish itself as a major denim force. In the televised advertisements, Brad Pitt sings of the wonders of the Edwin Jeans 503, which he apparently mispronounces. Although Brad Pitt refuses to appear in American commercials, he appeared in a long list of Asian Edwin Jeans commercials. Edwin Jeans were reputedly very disappointed to lose their star celebrity back in 1999.Recently there’s been talk of Edwin Jeans expanding it’s reach across the pacific. The brand, it is rumored, believes its product is able to compete outside its long established regional territory and compete on the global stage. Edwin Jeans does have a historical base in Europe and although they are the leading jeans supplier in Japan with 800 employees with their headquarters in Tokyo which is still located in the same 1947 building, Edwin Jeans has been present in Europe since 1979 and built a new European office is in Basel, Switzerland in 2003. That said, they have never been able to “crack” Levi’s American market.

The highlight of the Edwin Jeans SS collection is their Natural Indigo Fabric, all developed and made in Japan. Their Natural Indigo is hand dyed, woven on the old narrow looms and also features the Edwin Rainbow Selvage. The Edwin Rainbow Selvage is a historic feature that has been on Edwin Fabrics since 1963. They are extending the male jeans offer with 4 styles and enlarging the finish offer to 12 finishes by style. The female collection covers 6 bottoms styles and also tops. The finishes will be focused on worn 2nd hand looks or unwashed denim, also on rainbow selvage.

So if Edwin Jeans are planning to bring the fight to Levi Jeans in their own backyard, the question on everyone’s lips is will they be able to persuade Brad Pitt to break his decision not to appear in American commercials. If they can persuade Brad Pitt then who knows maybe they will be able to apply a decisive blow to Levi’s — it wouldn’t be the first time a Japanese company floored its American opposition!
