Shortly after announcing the discontinuation of its footwear, Ben Sherman has announced it will remain in the category with a new licensing partner: London-based Hudson Shoes.
“Since deciding to cease our in-house footwear business, we have had strong interest from most of the key players in the footwear sector to take the Ben Sherman footwear license,” said Ben Sherman CEO Miles Gray in a statement. “However our clear preference has been to establish a partnership with Hudson, who we feel tick all the boxes in terms of footwear expertise and full understanding of the Ben Sherman brand and its potential, and we really look forward to working with the Hudson team.”
Marc Verona of Hudson said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for Hudson. I am really looking forward to the challenge of putting a new team together to reposition the Ben Sherman footwear brand with some iconic pieces.”
Reps from Ben Sherman said retailers will receive fall orders as planned. Hudson’s first collection with the brand will debut in January 2010.
Ben Sherman, the original British MOD brand, will no longer produce footwear.
A statement issued Friday said the company plans to leave the shoe, kids’ and youth sectors by the end of 2009 to concentrate on men’s and women’s apparel instead.
“Together with many other leading companies in the U.K. fashion sector, we are experiencing challenging trading conditions, which are exacerbated by the effect of the fall in sterling against the dollar,” Miles Gray, CEO of Ben Sherman Group Ltd., said in the statement.

During the 70s, 80s and 90s the Ben Sherman button-down check shirt became the ultimate cultural icon through its adoration and adoption by Punk, Mod and Britpop movements. Bestford Ltd., owner of the Evisu, is to take control of distribution in the USA and Canada. Ben Sherman had been responsible for Evisu’s distribution for the last five years. According to a statement released by Bestford, the two companies agreed to an early handover of distribution rights. Sherman’s contract was scheduled to expire at the end of this year.
“This is a tremendously exciting time for Evisu in the U.S. and Canada,” said Peter Caplowe, chief executive officer of Bestford. “Ben Sherman remains our worldwide footwear licensee and we look forward to further developing with Ben Sherman our footwear business in the U.S., Canada and other markets.” Bestford will take over in the autumn. “Over the past five years, we have worked very hard to establish Evisu as a credible player in the U.S. and Canada markets and we are happy to hand back the reins to Peter Caplowe and his team with Evisu in a very strong condition,” Paul McAdam, Sherman’s North American president, said in a statement.
