Martin Margiela from Brand to Spirit

Martin Margiela from Brand to Spirit
Martin Margiela may have left his namesake label, but his work lives on. Aside from launching a collection of furniture and “white objects” for the home, Margiela also designed the Suite Ile aux Oiseaux at Les Sources de Caudalie near Bordeaux.

The hotel and spa, opened 10 years ago in the Smith Haut-Lafitte château, tapped Maison Martin Margiela to design its signature suite, which re-opened last week according to the New York Times. The freestanding cabana, perched on a pond, is now a world apart from the French country charm of the rooms in the château.

From 415 euros a night guests can retreat to the avant-garde chambre between spa treatments and bottles of premier cru at the hotel’s La Grand’Vigne restaurant.

The suite’s décor is classic Margiela, with naked lightbulbs, antique mirrors, and a red Bocca chair, the results make for a remarkable contrast from the conservative vineyards and rustic wooden balconies of the retreat.

New Balance Boston Marathon

New Balance Boston Marathon
New Balance clears the way. The old snowed-in excuse won’t fly this winter for Boston runners looking for an excuse not to work out, thanks to a new initiative cooked up by New Balance. The athletic company lined up a deal with the Department of Conservation and Recreation to ensure locals will have clear running paths along the Charles River through this spring’s Boston Marathon. New Balance chief executive officer Rob DeMartini said, “Outdoor recreation is vital this time of year with so many athletes training for the Boston Marathon. We want to help provide area fitness enthusiasts, both serious and casual, the best terrain along the Charles River.”

Vivienne Westwood Clothing to Wallpaper

Vivienne Westwood Clothing to Wallpaper

Vivienne Westwood is perhaps one of fashion’s most anti-establishment figures (how could the queen mother of the sex pistols not be), but that hasn’t stopped her from teaming with the posh British firm Cole & Son for a collection of wallpaper. The range, based on designs from past ready-to-wear collections, launched this month under the label Vivienne Westwood for Cole & Son. The wallpaper designs include Squiggle, which was taken from Westwood’s autumn 1981 Pirate collection, and Cut Out Lace, based on a fragment of antique lace taken from the spring 2007 I Am Expensiv collection. Prices range from 55 pounds, or $87, for a standard roll to 188 pounds, or $298, for a trompe l’oeil design that looks like a ruched tartan fabric. The collection will be available through Cole & Son’s U.S. stockists later this year. “This collection is a perfect opportunity to be able to work with a heritage company and to see my ideas from fashion translated into the world of interiors and wallpaper,” Westwood said.

Y-3 Trainers or Y3 Trainers

Y-3 Trainers or Y3 Trainers
So the question has been raised, should it be Y3 or Y-3. If there’s no hyphen there’s no bond!

The Y Stands for Yohji Yamamoto. The 3 represents Adidas’s three signature stripes and the – signifies the bond between the two.

While a utilitarian inspiration is evident throughout each collection, Y-3 possesses a technical feel on unexpected silhouettes to provide contemporary sportswear with a unique look. In 2009, Y-3 celebrated 60 years of iconic three stripes. This season, Yohji Yamamoto and adidas explore a more masculine approach to the themes of movement and expression. Inspired by uniform silhouettes, militarism and Japanese tailoring, this seasons aesthetic empathasizes precise proportions, fine details and the contrast of luxe winter fabrics with sport functional elements.

Lacoste Save the Croc, Save Your Logo

Lacoste Save the Croc, Save Your Logo
Lacoste will spend $500,000 over the next three years to help preserve endangered crocodiles.

Lacoste was talked into the scheme by the people at the Global Environment Facility, the World Bank, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature who run the “Save Your Logo Initiative.” Lacoste is the first fashion company to sign on:

“We hope to be able to give back to our iconic crocodile — to whom we owe so much — a small part of what he has brought us,” [Lacoste president Michael] Lacoste said. “Seventy-five years ago, we were the first company to embroider a logo on apparel, and now we are the first company to support ‘Save Your Logo.’”

Much of Lacoste’s efforts will concentrate on the Gange gharial crocodile, of which only 1,400 are estimated to remain in the wild.

Save Your Logo says more than 300 large global brands use animals or plants threatened by dwindling biodiversity in their logos. And so it falls on Vineyard Vines to save the whales. You know anyone wealthy and foolish enough to buy these can afford it.

Replay Jeans – Love Arts

Replay Jeans - Love Arts
Italian jeans wear manufacturer Replay will host an open air exhibition of works by emerging artists, on the facade of the Museum of 18th Century Venice. The company behind Replay and We Are Replay brands, continues the support and fund Fashion Box as part of the Imprenditori Illuminati ‘… near Venezia’ project, the restoration of the facade of Ca’ Rezzonico, which houses the Museum of 18th Century Venice.

Replay has been actively involved in the promotion of art throughout the world, both through its own initiatives and combined with those of the Venice-based Claudio Buziol Fondazione. Launched in 2006, the foundation aims to provide crucial support for young people to enable them achieve their ambitions. By helping younger generations to develop their creative skills and artistic expression, the foundation goal is to offer young artists greater exposure.

The ‘Replay loves Arts’ venture along with the open-air exhibition is part of the Claudio Buziol foundations commitment to art based developmental projects. Not choosing for a huge billboard which covers the facade of Ca’ Rezzonico during restoration work, it will provide a blank canvas every month for young emerging artists to showcase their work. As well as being featured externally on the outside wall of the CA’ Rezzonico the artist’s work, will then be exhibited in its original form inside the Museum.

At the end of each monthly residence, the billboard will be reused to create original bags made by the Rio Terà de’ Pensieri Cooperative, made up of volunteers and prison inmates, giving the operation a social purpose as well. Bags will be sold in the Venice Replay Store and the proceeds will go to the Claudio Buziol Foundation.

Stowers x Carreducker Oxford Boot
Stowers Bespoke have collaborated with bespoke shoe maker Carreducker and created a luxurious, hand-sewn, totally unique Oxford Boot, just in time for Christmas.

Worn with the matching Prince of Wales suit or with plain black or grey tweeds, the boots are a handsome edition to any outfit.

Yves Saint Laurent New Vintage II

Yves Saint Laurent New Vintage II

This winter, Yves Saint Laurent introduces ‘New Vintage II’ in the footsteps of the original NOHARM brand, the second edition of an environmentally-conscious capsule collection designed to reclaim, recycle and sustain. Recycling unused fabrics from the YSL archive, and adapting them to his classic silhouettes, Creative Director Stefano Pilati marries feminine refinement with sustainability — a concept more relevant than ever in today’s universe.

Pilati traditionally employs fabric innovation as a method to create uniqueness in a garment. In this second ‘New Vintage’ collection he presents several iconic silhouettes using the aforementioned archive fabrics exclusively and evolves them through varied treatments and distinctive textile combinations.

‘New Vintage II’ will be available as of mid-December 2009 in limited, numbered editions at the YSL flagship boutiques in Paris, London and New York. Having debuted in June 2009, the first ‘New Vintage’ collection was sold exclusively at Barneys New York — an innovator in the movement towards socially and environmentally-responsible fashion — where it met great demand and immediate success.
